WHAT IS A BACKYARD STUDIO?
A typical backyard studio has a kitchenette and/or ensuite but it’s not completely self-contained as a secondary dwelling (or it would be a granny flat).
Backyard studios are perfect when an older offspring or parent needs privacy but can share laundry facilities and some meals with the main house. Your backyard studio can be your daytime home-office with a kitchenette and ensuite that can sleep guests on the sofa-bed by night. Backyard studios are often used as poolside rumpus or games rooms with a wet bar and shower/toilet – a great space for sleepovers as well.
DO I NEED APPROVAL FOR A BACKYARD STUDIO?
In Australia, any rooms used for human habitation (eg: sleeping, etc) must be approved and/or certified – whether the rooms are in a separate structure or deemed an extension of the main house. If rooms are not for sleeping, etc (eg: enclosed cabana, workshop, utility room) some may not need approval. You can order skids for your Backyard Pod (instead of foundations) for easier relocation but many councils will not allow movable dwellings to remain on a property for more than a few days. We can help you to find out what would be permissible on your site before any pointless waste of time or money.
