A parent was quick to recognise that an adult son, soon returning from overseas travel to resume studies, would benefit in many ways from having a separate backyard studio flat with kitchenette, bed, wardrobe, and ensuite built for him on the family property in a trendy inner-Melbourne suburb. He could occupy it for a few years while studying, and perhaps beyond if saving a deposit for his own property. Although the available space would not accommodate a very large Backyard Pod (up to 4m x 5m or 3m x 6m), the living-separately-at-home student’s day-to-day lifestyle would happily extend into the main house with the sharing of meals and family life, and laundry facilities.
After consultation with an architect, the proportions of the pod kit were changed to 3m x 6m to minimise the visual impact of the pod in relation to the main house. The 3m x 6m pod kit is currently in fabrication for delivery in February 2018. We will cover the continuation of this backyard studio flat project as a separate case study.
