Rob needed somewhere to operate his new food business, ‘Beef Jerky King’. He wanted a place close to home that met food and health regulations but didn’t want the overheads or inconvenience generated by many regular commercial premises. What would be the best solution?
Due to food and health regulations, producing processed food for sale in a residential property is not permissible. Production requires commercial premises separate from the home. However, this can include a structure on your property that meets regulations and is apart from your residence. As his home kitchen was off the table, Rob began his search for something both suitable and affordable. After looking at various granny flat style buildings, he finally discovered Backyard Pods.
A backyard pod was ideal for many reasons. Firstly, Rob had spent many years running his business operations, ‘Carpet King Steam Cleaning’ and ‘King Hit Pest Management’. Making beef jerky started out as a hobby for Rob. Eventually, after some extremely successful sales trials at the local pub, he soon realised there was a demand for his tasty beef jerky. Rob’s hobby quickly took on a life of its own and ‘Beef Jerky King’ was crowned as a new business venture. Another aspect of this new business was the fact it was something Rob could take into retirement. If ‘Beef Jerky King’ operated from his property it allowed Rob to run everything at his own leisure while offering a handy supplement to any subsequent retirement income. Ultimately, a great home business for now and the future!
When Rob considered building structures for ‘Beef Jerky King’ he first looked at many permanent options such as granny flats, backyard studios, commercial industrial sheds, backyard office cabins, and many other structures that would suit a commercial food home business. However, if Rob ever wanted to move his beef jerky operation to another location the permanent nature of these constructions would make it highly improbable.
Backyard Pods gave Rob the ideal solution. As well as being very affordable, a backyard pod can be moved if necessary. After consulting with the helpful Backyard Pods team, Rob went ahead with a home business pod. He positioned the pod at the front of his house. This gave the appearance of a pop-up store. Rob wanted a space that not only enabled him to produce beef jerky but also included an area for customers to sample the product and makes purchases just like an actual shop.
Some of the fittings in the pod included a dishwasher, sink, stainless steel catering bench, and air-conditioning. Rob also installed a keg fridge for his home brew beer. The pop-up store met all the necessary regulations allowing ‘Beef Jerky King’ to finally grow from a hobby to a commercial food business. If Rob ever changed house, the pod could come along as well.
“I’m very happy with the end result”, said Rob. “So is my wife because I no longer take over the kitchen. The Backyard Pod’s team were terrific with a great, hands-on approach.”
